A lot of individuals struggle with openly talking about their problems or seeking help, leaving existing mental health issues unadressed. Feelings are dismissed and often people are ostracized or discriminated, even in the safety of their homes, as if they themselves are the problem. Sometimes, loved ones may not understand and sweep the problem under the rug in order to ‘save-face’, thereby contributing to the widespread problem of stigma around mental health. Phrases like ‘sleep it off’ and “you’re being over-dramatic” in the face of adversity are all too common and these can bring about a great deal of frustration and helplessness, ultimately leading to the fear and guilt for voicing or facing the problem. While talking may be scary, the liberation that follows is more than worth it!
